Everything you need to SLAY your wash day!
Oh wash day!! Secretly everyone is dreading it, but you don't have to be one of them. If you've got a plan going into the shower than your chances of coming out the other side unscathed dramatically increase. Here I breakdown what I do on a weekly, monthly, and six week basis to keep my hair healthy, moisturized, and strong. When it is all said and done my hair is ready to slay my next wash and go or twist out. So here’s how I do it:
1. Pre-Poo and Finger Detangle: Weekly
First, things first. You have gotta finger detangle. Especially before you get into the shower. Since I have thick tightly coiled hair, I like to take my time and gently get rid of all the tangles. I’ve noticed that this way cuts down on breakage and makes my curls more defined. Here you just take the spray bottle and coconut oil and detangle your hair in medium sized sections. I also take this time to massage my scalp with some tea tree oil. The tea tree oil helps prevent dandruff and draws blood to the scalp to stimulate growth.
2. Cleanse: Monthly
I know there are some people out there who are staunch advocates against shampooing. I get it. But here’s the thing, I use a lot of product, it helps to weigh my hair down and give me definition. I’ve yet to come across a co-wash that will leave me with a completely clean slate. Every month I alternate between a sulfate free shampoo or a bentonite clay treatment. The bentonite clay acts as a shampoo and deep conditioner all and one and leaves my curls ready to pop.
3. Condition/Cowash: Weekly
It might seem like overkill to shampoo, condition and deep condition but doing all three yields the best results for me. Make sure that the shampoo and conditioner are from the same product line. These are formulated to work together and will make your curls react. When it's a week that I do not shampoo, I use mass quantities of conditioner to co-wash my hair before applying my deep conditioner. I used to use conditioner as my leave in, but the shrinkage was just too much.
4. Deep Condition: Weekly
I step out of the shower to thoroughly apply my deep conditioner. I section my hair into four and smooth the product down the length of the strand to ensure it's evenly coated. It's very important to take your time with this step and leave it in for at least 30 mins. Ya know, walk around your living space, do some cleaning. The more heat that you generate in your body, the deeper the product will penetrate into your hair shaft. When I'm done I rinse the product out with cold water to seal in all that moisture.
5. Protein Treatment: Every 6 Weeks
Now if you aren't including protein in your regimen, then you're hustling backwards. Protein strengthens your hair so that it is less prone to breakage. All the moisture in the world won't matter if your hair is as weak as Bambi's legs. The Aphogee Two-Step protein treatment is my go to for when my strands are looking a little weak. If I'm really bout that life then I'll whip up some henna. I'll take up a whooole post detailing my henna adventures but for now just check out my Instagram post on the subject.
